Disassembly and Assembly

NOTE: Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove cylinder heads (6049).

CAUTION: If cylinder head valve components are to be reused, mark position of valve components to ensure that they are assembled in their original positions.

2. Compress valve springs (6513) using Valve Spring Compressor Set T89P-6565-A, pivot bar from Valve Spring Compressor Pivot Set T87C-6565-A and Valve Spring Compressor Adapter T94P-6565-AH and remove valve spring retainer keys (6518), valve spring retainers (6514) and valve springs.
3. Remove intake valves (6507) and exhaust valves (6505) from cylinder head.
4. Inspect cylinder heads, valve guides, valves, valve springs, valve spring retainers, valve spring retainer keys and cylinder head camshaft journals. Replace components as required.

5. Remove valve stem seals (6571) using Valve Stem Seal Remover T94P-6510-AH and Slide Hammer T59L-100-B.

6. Remove valve guides from cylinder head if necessary upon inspection by using Valve Guide Remover/Replacer T89P-6510-A and by driving valve guides out from the bottom of the cylinder head.
7. Remove pipe plugs and alignment dowels from cylinder head as necessary to clean cylinder head.

ASSEMBLY

WARNING: EYE PROTECTION IS REQUIRED TO BE WORN DURING USE OF COMPRESSED AIR. FAILURE TO WEAR EYE PROTECTION COULD RESULT IN POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

NOTE: Clean cylinder head gasket surface with a toluene-based paint thinner or gasket remover. If gasket material remains on cylinder head after cleaning, use a plastic-tipped scraper and Scotch Brite or 600 grit sandpaper to remove remaining material.

1. Clean gasket material, dirt and debris from cylinder head. Wash cylinder head with a suitable soap and water solution. Dry cylinder head completely using compressed air.
2. If removed, install pipe plugs and alignment dowels to cylinder head. Apply Pipe Sealant with Teflon(R) D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G350-A2, ESR-M18P2-A and ESR-M18P7-A to pipe plugs prior to installation.

3. If removed, install valve guides into cylinder heads using Valve Guide Remover/Replacer T89P-6510-A and Valve Guide Replacer Adapter T94P-6510-DH. Lubricate valve guides and install by driving valve guides into cylinder heads from top of cylinder heads.
4. Using Valve Stem Seal Replacer T94P-6510-CH, install valve stem seal onto cylinder head valve guides.
5. Lubricate valve stems and guides with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A and install valves into cylinder head.
6. Using Valve Spring Compressor Set T89P-6565-A, pivot bar from Valve Spring Compressor Pivot Set T87C-6565-A and Valve Spring Compressor Adapter T94P-6565-AH, install valve springs, valve spring retainers and valve spring retainer keys onto cylinder head and valves.
