M - Slow or Incomplete Brake Pedal Return

M1- Check Brake Pedal Return
- Run engine at fast idle while making several brake applications.
- Pull brake pedal rearward with approximately 44.5 N (10 lbs) of force.
- Release the pedal and measure the distance to the toe board.
- Make a hard brake application and release the pedal.
- Measure the the pedal to toe board distance. The pedal should return to its original position.
- Did the pedal return to its original position ?
YES - Vehicle OK.
NO - Go to M2.

M2- Brake Pedal Binding
- Check brake pedal operation to be sure it is operating freely.
- Is brake pedal operating freely ?
YES - Replace the power brake booster and retest. Refer to Hydraulic System.
NO - Service or replace brake pedal bushings. Correct any cause for sticking or binding brake pedal and repeat M2.
