Traction Control System

DESCRIPTION
The optional traction control system is designed to control wheel spin when accelerating on slippery or loose surfaces. Traction control system is available only with anti-lock brakes.

COMPONENTS - The traction control system includes the following components:
- Hydraulic control unit.
- Throttle control actuator.
- Traction control switch.
- Traction control warning indicator.
- Front brake anti-lock sensor.
- Rear brake anti-lock sensor.

OPERATION - The traction control system operates as follows:
- System functions by transferring torque from the spinning wheel to the wheel with the most traction.
- This is achieved by applying the brake at the spinning wheel through the hydraulic control unit or reducing the throttle opening.
- Traction control braking and throttle control occur at vehicle speeds up to 50 km/h (30 mph).
- At vehicle speeds above 50 km/h (30 mph), only throttle limiting control is used.
- If speed control is operating when traction control system engages the traction control system will disengage speed control through the use of a speed control relay. This action is the same as applying the brake pedal with speed control engaged.

THROTTLE CONTROL ACTUATOR
- The throttle control actuator is located in the right front corner of the engine compartment.
- Throttle function is controlled by the throttle control unit through two cables. One cable is attached to the accelerator pedal and to the throttle control unit. The other cable attaches to the throttle control unit and goes to the throttle body.
- The throttle control actuator controls throttle opening by effectively lengthening the cable to the throttle body, reducing the throttle opening for a given accelerator pedal position.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR
- A throttle position sensor is mounted to the top of the throttle control actuator which communicates throttle position to the hydraulic control unit.
- The traction control throttle position sensor is an integral part of throttle control actuator and is serviced only as an assembly.

TRACTION CONTROL SWITCH
- The traction control switch is located on the instrument panel, left of the steering column.
- When activated, the traction control switch disables the traction control system.
- To enable the traction control system, activate the traction control switch or the system will enable if the ignition switch is cycled "OFF" and "ON".

TRACTION CONTROL ACTIVE LAMP - The traction control indicator is located on the cluster. The traction control indicator will illuminate if:
- traction control switch is manually pushed to disable the system.
- traction control system is operating.
- a fault exists in the traction control system.

TRACTION CONTROL ACTIVE LAMP - The traction control indicator is located on the cluster. The traction control indicator will illuminate if:

- a fault exists in the traction control system.

HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU), ANTI-LOCK BRAKE
- The anti-lock brake control module is located on the hydraulic control unit (HCU).
- The hydraulic control unit is located below the brake master cylinder.

BRAKE SENSOR, ANTI-LOCK
- The anti-lock brake sensor electrically senses each tooth of the anti-lock sensor indicator as it passes through the anti-lock brake sensor's magnetic field. This data is sent to the anti-lock brake control module. The anti-lock brake control module monitors the brake anti-lock sensors to determine wheel rotational speed.
