Before Disassembly

Inspect differential case assembly and differential ring gear and pinion before removing the rear axle housing. These inspections may help detect the cause and determine the solution.
1. Wipe lubricant from internal working parts and inspect parts for wear and/or damage.
2. Rotate gears to see if there is any roughness which would indicate worn or damaged bearings or gears.
3. Check ring gear teeth for signs of scoring, abnormal wear, nicks or chips.
4. Set up Dial Indicator With Bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent. Check ring gear backlash and ring gear backface runout.
