Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Make sure front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and steering column shaft alignment mark is at the 12 o'clock position.

WARNING: The backup power supply energy must be depleted before any air bag component service is performed. To deplete backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute to avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury.

2. Disconnect battery ground cable. Disconnect air bag backup power supply.
3. Remove steering wheel.
4. Remove lower RH and LH mouldings from instrument panel by pulling up and snapping out of retainer.
5. Remove instrument panel steering column cover and lower steering column shroud.
6. Disconnect air bag sliding contact wire harness.






7. Apply two strips of tape across air bag sliding contact stator and rotor to prevent accidental rotation.
8. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder and remove ignition key warning switch terminal and wire.
9. Detach main wiring connectors down steering column tube side.
10. Remove three air bag sliding contact retaining screws and pull air bag sliding contact off steering column shaft assembly.

INSTALLATION
1. Make sure front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and steering gear input worm gear and rack alignment mark is at the 12 o'clock position.
2. Align air bag sliding contact to steering gear input worm gear and rack and mounting bosses and slide air bag sliding contact on to the steering column shaft assembly.

NOTE: If a new air bag sliding contact is being installed, remove the plastic lock mechanism after air bag sliding contact is secured to steering column shaft assembly.

3. Install three retaining screws. Tighten screws to 2-3 Nm (18-26 lb in). Remove tape strips.
4. Route air bag sliding contact wires down steering column and connect to wire harness.
5. Install ignition key warning switch terminal and wire into steering column lock cylinder housing.
6. Connect main wiring connectors down steering column.
7. Install lower steering column shroud and instrument panel steering column cover.
8. Install ignition switch lock cylinder.
9. Install steering wheel.
10. Connect battery ground cable.
11. Verify air bag warning indicator
