Ignition Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect ignition wire from spark plug by grasping the boot and twisting slightly in both directions to free it.

CAUTION: Do not pull on the ignition wire directly, the wire may separate from the connector inside the boot.

Removing Ignition Wires At Coil Pack:

2. Disconnect the ignition wire from the ignition coil by squeezing the locking tabs and twisting while pulling upward.
3. Remove ignition wire separators from valve cover retaining studs, open ignition wire separators and remove ignition wire.

INSTALLATION
1. Whenever an ignition wire is removed for any reason from a spark plug or ignition coil or a new ignition wire is installed, coat the entire interior surface of the boots with Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A using a small clean tool prior to installation.

CAUTION: Proper installation of ignition wires is critical to vehicle operation. If any ignition wire is not properly installed on spark plug or ignition coil both spark plugs connected to that ignition coil may not operate under load.

2. Install each ignition wire to the proper terminal on the ignition coils. The terminals on the ignition coils are numbered. Make sure the boots are fully seated on the terminals and that both ignition wire locking tabs are engaged.
3. Route ignition wire through ignition wire separator and close ignition wire separators. Install ignition wire separators onto valve cover retaining studs.
4. Connect ignition wire to spark plug.

NOTE: Ignition wire spark plug boot must be positioned 90 degrees from crankshaft centerline (outboard and forward) to make sure the boot seal is fully seated.
