Parking Brake Control: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Remove battery ground cable.
2. Fully release parking brake.
3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
4. Release cable tension. Tension Release
5. Separate front parking brake cable and conduit from parking brake rear cable and conduits at the connector.
6. Lower vehicle.
7. Partially remove scuff plate and partially remove front door lower weatherstrip.
8. Remove parking brake release handle mounting screw from instrument panel steering column cover.
- Slide parking brake release handle back and down to remove from instrument panel steering column cover.
9. Remove center instrument panel mouldings (RH and LH) to gain access to instrument panel steering column cover.
10. Remove instrument panel steering column cover retaining bolts and remove instrument panel steering column cover.
11. Remove steering column-to-parking brake control shake brace.
12. Remove powertrain control module (PCM).
13. Remove parking brake release vacuum hose from parking brake release control motor.
14. Remove LH cowl side trim panel.
15. Remove fuse junction panel retaining nuts and move fuse panel aside to gain working room.
16. Remove LH lower instrument panel retaining bolts.
Restraining Instrument Panel With Block Of Wood:
17. Pull out and retain the instrument panel rearward slightly by installing a small block of wood or similar tool between the instrument panel and the body.
18. Remove parking brake control retaining bolts.
19. Lower parking brake control. Disconnect the front parking brake cable and conduit from parking brake control reel.
Parking Brake Release Cable To Parking Brake Control:
20. Remove parking brake release handle from parking brake control by snapping the two release handle bushings out of the parking brake control release lever.
INSTALLATION
1. Attach parking brake release handle to parking brake control by snapping two parking brake handle bushings into parking brake control release lever.
2. Position parking brake control and connect front parking brake cable and conduit.
3. Install parking brake control-to-body side cowl and install three retaining bolts.
- Tighten to 25-35 Nm (19-25 ft. lbs.).
4. Remove wood block from instrument panel and install lower instrument panel retaining bolts.
- Tighten retaining bolts to 10-14 Nm (89-123 inch lbs.).
5. Install powertrain control module.
6. Install steering column-to-parking brake control shake brace.
7. Attach parking brake release vacuum hose to parking brake release control motor.
8. Position fuse junction panel and install retaining nuts.
9. Install LH cowl side trim panel.
10. Install lower instrument panel steering column cover except lower LH screw and install center instrument panel mouldings.
11. Position door weatherstrip and push into place.
12. Position scuff plate and install retaining screws.
NOTE: If the release handle locator tab is not fed through the column cover locating hole, the parking brake release handle will not fit properly to the instrument panel steering column cover.
13. Attach parking brake release handle to instrument panel steering column cover by inserting handle locator tab through the cover's locating hole, sliding the parking brake release handle forward.
- Install parking brake release handle mounting screw.
- Tighten to 1-2 Nm (9-17 inch lbs.).
14. Raise vehicle.
15. Connect front parking brake cable and conduit to parking brake rear cable and conduit.
16. Perform adjustment if necessary. Adjustments
17. Lower vehicle and connect battery ground cable.
18. Check operation of parking brake control.
