Electronic Instrument Cluster Display Prove Out
The electronic instrument cluster display prove out operates in the following manner:- Each time the ignition switch is turned from OFF to RUN, the three electronic displays will prove out by momentarily lighting all of the segments and then momentarily turning all display segments off
- After the prove out, the three displays return to normal operation.
- Prove-out mode indicates that all display segments are operating properly.
- After initial prove-out period with ignition switch in RUN, these warning indicators are off with the ignition switch in RUN (warnings will be on with ignition switch in RUN, engine OFF).
- When instrument cluster receives a signal from a sensor, the instrument cluster processes that signal and turns on the respective indicator. For example:
- If the AIR BAG indicator is on or flashing, the air bag diagnostic monitor has detected a fault in the supplemental restraint system.
- It warns the driver by sending a signal to the instrument cluster.
- Consequently the air bag diagnostic monitor turns on AIR BAG indicator.
There are three exceptions to prove out:
- The turn signal and high beam indicators will not light during prove out.
- In addition, the safety belt, CHECK ENGINE, AIR BAG, and oil pressure warning indicators will remain illuminated during the blank portion of prove out and then go blank at the beginning of, or shortly after, normal instrument cluster display.
- The charging system warning proves out by lighting when the ignition switch is turned to RUN, before the engine is started.
