Cable Adjustment

Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Components/Description:

NOTE: This procedure requires the use of a cable tension tool.

CAUTION: With the parking brake control (2780) in OFF position, the rear parking brake shoe and lining (2N712) must not drag. Check for movement of the parking brake rear cable and conduits (2A635) from their conduits when the front parking brake cable and conduit (2853) is deflected with a force of 45-65 N (10-15 lbs).

1. Apply parking brake with 445 Nm (100 lb) foot pedal effort.
- Release parking brake control -- repeat application and release.
2. Place transmission in NEUTRAL (N) and raise vehicle on an axle-type hoist.
3. With parking brake control in the OFF position, grasp tensioner around housing. Using a tool similar to the one shown, hook the end into the rounded end at clip between clip and housing.
- Unlock clip by pulling downward with the tool while holding tensioner.
- Tensioner spring will take up cable slack and preload cables.
- While holding tensioner, lock the clip by pushing up on bottom of clip.
- If clip does not slide up, move assembly slightly to align closest groove on adjuster rod to the clip.
4. Examine tensioner for remaining cable take-up capability.
- If none is present, check all cables, parking brake control and brackets for possible damage or deflection.
- Replace damaged parts and tension by using initial installation adjustment procedure.
5. Insert LH parking brake rear cable and conduit into a black plastic front parking brake cable retainer (2K865) which hangs under floorpan.
6. Snap retainer shut.
