Disassembly and Assembly
DISASSEMBLY
CAUTION:
Component Location/Orientation
The location and orientation of each precision machined component should be noted. When engine is assembled each component should be installed in its original position. These components include:
^ Rocker arms, rocker arm seats and valve tappets.
^ Connecting rod, connecting rod bearings and bearing caps.
^ Crankshaft main bearings and bearing caps.
^ Pistons, piston rings and piston pins.
^ Camshafts and camshaft journals.
NOTE: Camshaft must be at base circle before compressing valve spring (6513). Rotate camshaft as required until all rocker arms (6564) are removed.
1. Install Valve Spring Compressor T91P-6565-A under camshaft and on top of valve spring retainer (6514).
2. Install Valve Spring Spacer T91P-6565-AH between valve spring coils.
3. Compress valve spring with Valve Spring Compressor T91P-6565-A far enough to remove rocker arm.
4. Further compress valve spring with Valve Spring Compressor T91P-6565-A and remove valve spring retainer keys (6518), valve spring retainer and valve spring.
5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 until all rocker arms are removed.
6. Remove all valve tappets (6500).
7. Remove valve stem seal (6571) using locking pliers and remove intake valve (6507) and exhaust valves (6505).
8. Remove 14 bolts retaining camshaft bearing caps (6B280) to cylinder head (6049).
9. Tap upward on camshaft bearing caps to gradually lift camshaft bearing caps from cylinder head. Remove camshaft.
ASSEMBLY
1. Position camshaft on cylinder head. Apply clean engine oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-F to journals and lobes of camshaft (6250).
2. Install and seat camshaft bearing cap. Hand-start 14 bolts.
NOTE: Each camshaft bearing cap is tightened individually.
3. Tighten camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts in sequence to 8-12 Nm (71-106 inch lbs.).
4. Loosen 14 camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts approximately two turns or until head of bolt is free.
5. Retighten all bolts in sequence to 8-12 Nm (71-106 inch lbs.).
6. Lubricate valve tappets with clean oil and install into cylinder head.
NOTE: A knotted rag or similar item must be positioned under intake valve and exhaust valve to hold them in the UP position.
7. Install valves into cylinder head.
8. Install new valve stem seals using Valve Stem Seal Replacer T91P-6571-A.
9. Position valve spring and valve spring retainer onto valves.
10. Install Valve Spring Compressor T91P-6565-A, under camshaft and on top of valve spring retainer.
11. Install Valve Spring Spacer T91P-6565-AH between valve spring coils.
12. Using Valve Spring Compressor T91P-6565-A, compress valve spring far enough to install valve spring retainer key.
NOTE: Camshaft must be at base circle prior to compressing valve spring to insert rocker arm.
13. Compress valve spring far enough to install rocker arm.
14. Repeat Steps 6 through 11 until all intake valves and exhaust valves are installed. Rotate camshaft as necessary until all rocker arms are installed.
