Disassembly

Fig. 16 CV Boot Clamp Installation:






1. Remove large boot clamp by engaging pincer jaws in closing locks (A and B) and drawing hooks together. Disengage windows and locking hooks and remove boot clamp.

NOTE: Low profile boot clamps are used at the inboard large clamp location. Use Boot Clamp Pliers D87P-1090-A or equivalent to remove.






2. Slide inboard CV joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing off of tripod.





3. When replacing damaged rear axle shaft inner boot, the grease should be checked for contamination.
- If the CV joints are operating satisfactorily and the grease does not appear to be contaminated, add grease and replace the rear axle shaft inner boot.
- If the grease appears contaminated, proceed with a complete CV joint disassembly and inspection.





4. Remove trilobe insert from inboard CV joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing.





5. Move rear axle shaft joint assembly retaining ring back on shaft using snap-ring pliers.





6. Move tripod assembly back on shaft to allow access to U-washer.





7. Remove U-washer from shaft.





8. Remove tripod assembly from shaft.
9. Remove rear axle shaft joint assembly retaining ring from shaft.





10. Remove rear axle shaft inner boot.

Boot Clamp Removal:





11. Cut the boot clamps using side cutters and peel away from the rear axle shaft outer boot in the direction of arrow as shown.

NOTE: The outboard CV joint is permanently retained to the interconnecting shaft and cannot be disassembled. If rear axle shaft outer boot replacement is necessary, check CV joint condition and, if reusable, clean and repack with Constant Velocity Joint Grease (High-Temp) E43Z-19590-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESP-M1C207-A.





12. Reposition halfshaft assembly in vise and remove rear axle shaft outer boot.
