When Not Replacing Differential Case or Bearings

DESCRIPTION
Follow this procedure when only differential ring gear and pinion replacement is required and differential bearings and differential case do not require replacement.

PROCEDURE
1. Remove differential caps and bolts. Identify RH cap, RH cup and differential bearing shim spacer to keep these components as RH and LH sets.
2. Remove differential case subassembly using pry bar method. Reasonable effort will be required to remove subassembly if preload is within specification range. If subassembly can be removed by hand, use alternate Differential Carrier Installation procedure.
3. Replace differential ring gear and pinion using differential bearing shim components from original assembly and select drive pinion bearing adjustment shim. (Differential bearing shim may be reused with exception of drive pinion bearing adjustment shim which will require regauging to specification before assembly).
4. Tighten rear axle differential gear case bolt in criss-cross pattern. Tighten rear axle differential gear case bolt to 95-115 Nm (70-84 ft. lbs.).
