Ignition Cable: Service and Repair
REMOVALSpark Plug Wire Remover:
1. When removing ignition wires from spark plug, use Spark Plug Wire Remover T74P-6666-A. Grasp and twist the ignition wire spark plug boot back and forth on the spark plug insulator to free the boot.
CAUTION: The alternator must be removed to allow for accessibility of the ignition wires that are routed below the alternator.
Removing Ignition Wires At Coil Pack:
2. Do not pull on the ignition wire directly as the wire may separate from the connector inside the boot.
CAUTION: Disconnect the ignition wire from the coil pack by squeezing the locking tabs and twisting while pulling upward.
3. Open ignition wire separators and remove ignition wire.
INSTALLATION
1. Whenever an ignition wire is removed from a spark plug or coil pack or a new ignition wire is installed, coat the entire interior surface of the boot with Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A with a small, clean tool prior to installation.
2. Install each ignition wire to the proper terminal on the coil packs. The terminals on the ignition coils are numbered. Make sure the boots are fully seated and that both locking tabs are engaged.
CAUTION: Proper installation of ignition wires is critical to vehicle operation. If any ignition wire is not properly installed on spark plug or ignition coil, both spark plugs connected to that coil pack may not operate under load.
3. Route ignition wire through ignition wire separators and close ignition wire separators.
4. Connect ignition wire to spark plug.
NOTE: Ignition wire spark plug boot must be positioned 90 degrees from crankshaft centerline (outboard and forward) to make sure the boot seal is fully seated.
