Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair





CAUTION:
Aluminum Components
Do not work on aluminum engine components until the engine is cold.

Cleaning Aluminum Surfaces
Do not use abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material; use only plastic manual scrapers. Do not scratch or gouge aluminum sealing surfaces.

Removing Aluminum Components
When removing engine components, always remove retaining bolts in reverse of tightening sequence or damage to engine components may occur.

REMOVAL
1. Remove transmission from vehicle. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
2. Remove flywheel (6375).

CAUTION: Use care to avoid damaging retainer when removing seal. A damaged retainer may cause engine oil leakage.

3. Remove crankshaft rear oil seal slinger (6310) using Rear Crankshaft Slinger Remover and Slide Hammer T5OT-100-A.


4. Remove crankshaft rear oil seal (6701) using Rear Crankshaft Seal Remover T95P-6701-EH and Slide Hammer T5OT-100-A.
5. If required remove crankshaft rear oil seal retainer.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Remove all traces of dirt, oil or previously applied sealant. Clean all sealing surfaces with Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M5B392-A. Sealing surfaces must be clean and dry before applying sealant.

1. Clean and inspect crankshaft rear oil seal retainer and retainer-to-cylinder block mating surfaces.

NOTE: Crankshaft rear oil seal retainer must be installed and bolts tightened to specification within five minutes of sealer application.





2. Apply a 2.0 mm (0.08 inch) continuous bead of Anaerobic Gasket Compound Sealer or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G348-A9 to cylinder block (6010) as shown.





3. Install crankshaft rear oil seal retainer and tighten bolts in sequence shown to 8-12 Nm (71-106 inch lbs.).





4. Install new crankshaft rear oil seal using Rear Crankshaft Seal Replacer T95P-6701-BH and Rear Crankshaft Adapter T95P-6701-DH.





5. Install crankshaft oil slinger (6310) using Rear Slinger Seal Replacer T95P-6701-BH.
6. Install flywheel and transmission.
