Valve Spring: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove valve covers (6582) and rocker arms (6564)
2. Remove spark plug (12405) from applicable cylinder.
3. Position piston (6108) at top of stroke with both exhaust valve (6505) and intake valve (6507) closed.

NOTE: Failure of air pressure to hold the exhaust valve and intake valve closed while performing the following steps is an indication of valve and/or valve seat damage and requires removal of cylinder head (6049).

4. Install an air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn air supply ON.
5. Install Valve Spring Spacer T91P-6565-AH between valve spring coils.

6. Compress valve spring (6513) using Valve Spring Compressor T91P-6565-A.

CAUTION: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve(s) to fall into the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this from happening and still allow enough travel to check the valve for binds and excessive guide-to-valve stem clearance.

7. Remove valve spring retainer keys (6518), valve spring retainer (6514) and valve spring.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Piston must be at top dead center (TDC) of cylinder being serviced.

1. Remove air pressure from spark plug adapter. Inspect the valve stem for damage. Rotate the valve and check the valve stem tip for eccentric movement during rotation. Move the valve up and down through normal travel in the valve guide and check the stem for binds.

CAUTION: If the valve has been damaged, it will be necessary to remove the cylinder head for service.

2. If the condition of the valve is satisfactory, apply clean engine oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-F to the valve stem and hold the valve closed. Apply the air pressure within the cylinder.

3. Position valve spring and valve spring retainer over valve stem.
4. Install Valve Spring Spacer between valve spring coils.
5. Compress valve spring using Valve Spring Compressor and install valve spring retainer key.
6. Remove Valve Spring Compressor and Valve Spring Spacer.
7. Turn air supply OFF and remove adapter from spark plug hole.
8. Install spark plug.
9. Install rocker arms and valve covers
10. Start engine and check for leaks.
