Static (Engine OFF)
PROCEDURES^ Remove the valve cover.
^ Check for damaged and severely worn parts and correct assembly.
^ Make sure correct components are being used.
CAMSHAFTS
^ Inspect camshaft, camshaft lobes, and journals for excessive wear or scoring. Repair or replace as necessary.
^ Check bolts on timing chain tensioner (6L266).
^ Check for loose mounting bolts on camshaft carriers/journals.
^ Check camshaft lobe lift.
VALVE TAPPETS/HYDRAULIC LASH ADJUSTERS
^ Inspect the friction surfaces of the valve tappets/hydraulic lash adjusters for wear or damage.
^ Check for plugged oil feed in the valve tappets (6500) or cylinder heads.
POSITIVE ROTATOR AND VALVE SPRING RETAINER KEYS
^ Check for proper seating in the positive rotator and on valve stem.
ROCKER ARM
^ Check rocker arm assemblies for loose mounting bolts, studs, and nuts.
^ Check for plugged oil feed in the rocker arm and cylinder head.
^ Check for dislodged rocker arms.
VALVE SPRINGS
^ Check for broken or damaged components.
VALVE SPRING RETAINER AND VALVE SPRING RETAINER KEYS
^ Check for proper seating of the valve spring retainer keys on the valve stems and in the valve spring retainers.
VALVES AND CYLINDER HEAD
^ When inspecting the cylinder head check the following:
a. Check the head gasket for proper installation.
b. Check for plugged oil drain back holes.
c. Check for worn or damaged valve tips.
d. Check for missing or damaged guide-mounted valve stem seal (6571).
e. Check collapsed valve tappet gap.
f. Check installed valve spring height.
g. Check for missing or worn valve spring seats (if equipped).
h. Check for plugged oil metering orifice in cylinder head oil reservoir.
