Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
DESCRIPTIONPerform the following when investigating a concern of overheating or an insufficient heater/defroster performance.
LEAK CHECK
Check for any leaks in the following:
^ Radiator cap.
^ Pressure relief cap.
^ Heater hoses.
^ Radiator hoses.
^ Water hose connection gasket.
^ Head gasket.
^ Water pump housing gasket (8507).
Replace leaking components as necessary before continuing.
COOLANT LEVEL
1. Check the cold engine coolant level in the radiator.
2. If the level is below the filler neck, fill to the filler neck with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or -B (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC; in Canada, CXC-8-B), recycled coolant or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A and water.
3. Fill the degas bottle to the FULL COLD mark.
OPERATION TEST
1. If the cold engine coolant level in the degas bottle is sufficient, run the vehicle for 10 minutes with the pressure relief cap or radiator cap installed.
2. Check for coolant circulation through the heater and radiator hoses. If the coolant drops below the FULL HOT mark, add coolant to the filler neck. Repeat the above procedure until all the air is purged from the cooling system.
3. When this procedure has been completed, feel the heater inlet and outlet hoses, and the underside of the upper radiator hose. The water thermostat should be replaced only if these hoses are cold after 10 minutes of operation.
