Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove brake drum.





4. Disconnect parking brake rear cable and conduit from parking brake lever.
5. Remove two brake shoe hold-down retainers, brake shoe hold-down springs and brake shoe hold-down spring pins.
6. Lift rear brake shoes and linings, springs and adjuster off rear brake backing plate as an assembly. Do not bend brake shoe adjusting lever.
7. Remove brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
8. To separate rear brake shoes and linings, remove brake shoe retracting springs.
9. Remove parking brake lever pin retainer and spring washer. Remove brake shoe adjusting lever from adapter.

INSTALLATION
1. Apply a light coating of silicone brake caliper grease and dielectric compound to rear brake backing plate brake shoe and lining contact areas.
2. Apply a light coat of long life grease to threaded areas of adjuster screw and brake shoe adjusting screw socket. Assemble brake adjuster washer. Turn brake shoe adjusting screw socket all the way down on screw, then back off one-half turn.
3. Install parking brake lever to trailing shoe with spring washer and new parking brake lever pin retainer. Crimp parking brake lever pin retainer to securely retain parking brake lever.
4. Position trailing shoe on rear brake backing plate and attach parking brake rear cable and conduit.
5. Install brake shoe hold-down spring pin, brake shoe hold-down spring and retainers onto trailing shoe.
6. Position leading shoe on rear brake backing plate and attach brake shoe retracting spring to rear brake shoes and linings.
7. Install brake shoe hold-down spring, brake shoe hold-down spring and retainers onto leading shoe.
8. Install adjuster assembly to slots in rear brake shoe and lining. Brake shoe adjusting screw socket end must fit into slot in leading shoe (wider slot). Slot in adjuster nut must fit into slots in trailing shoe and parking brake lever.
9. Install brake shoe adjusting lever on pin on leading rear brake shoe and lining and to slot in brake shoe adjusting screw socket.
10. Install brake shoe retracting spring in slot on trailing shoe and slot in brake shoe adjusting lever. Brake shoe adjusting lever should contact star wheel and adjuster assembly.
11. Adjust brake shoes. Adjustments
12. Install brake drum.
13. Install wheel and tire assembly.
14. Lower vehicle and retest brake system.
