Refinishing
NOTE: If new rear brake shoes and linings are being installed, resurface the brake drums to remove glazing and to ensure an equal friction surface from side-to-side. Resurfacing will also correct out-of-round and bell conditions.REFINISHING
^ Minor scores on a brake drum can be removed with sandpaper. Do not refinish brake drums to remove score marks.
^ A highly polished drum surface can cause brake lock up or noise. This polished condition should be removed with sandpaper.
^ Remove only enough stock to true-up the brake drum. When brake drum is exceeded either through wear or refinishing, the brake drum must be replaced.
^ After a brake drum is refinished, wipe refinished surface with a cloth soaked in clean, denatured alcohol.
^ If one brake drum is refinished, the opposite brake drum on the same axle should also be refinished.
^ After refinishing a brake drum, recheck the diameter.
^ Follow lathe manufacturers instructions and machine the brake drum.
