Lumbar Support System
NOTE: Front seat armature support is available on Cougar 30th anniversary vehicle. The front seat back pad adjuster system consists of the following components:
- Seat regulator control switch.
- A lumbar front seat back pad adjuster.
- Two front seat armatures.
- A front seat back pad adjusting pump.
- Seat back control wiring.
- Front seat adjusting motor drive tube
- Front seat back pad adjusting hose.
The system operates as follows:
- During the inflate mode, the front seat back pad adjusting pump pumps air through a hose to the lumbar or bolster seat back control switch and housing check valve.
- The air is then routed through a separate hose to the lumbar or bolster support front seat back pad adjusters located in the seat back.
- The bolster support front seat back pad adjusters actuate a spring-loaded front seat armature which articulates the bolster inward when inflated.
Except for front seat back pad adjusters, all components are generally located at or under the front seat cushion frame and spring.
CAUTION: The longer nipple on the seat control switch (located at the center of the switch body) should always be connected to the hose leading to the lumbar front seat back pad adjuster. The shorter nipple on the switch body connects to the front seat back pad adjusting pump outlet. If this order is reversed, the lumbar front seat back pad adjuster will not hold air pressure.
The seat control switch performs three functions:
- Turns front seat back pad adjusting pump on.
- Acts as a one-way check valve for air passage to lumbar and bolster front seat back pad adjusters. Once inflated, the seat control switch is returned to its normal mode and the check valve closes. This maintains air pressure in the front seat back pad adjuster.
- When deflated, the check valve in the seat control switch opens to deflate the lumbar or bolster front seat back pad adjuster. The spring loaded front seat armature then returns to its retracted position. In this mode, the front seat back pad adjusting pump does not operate.
