Removal and Installation
REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Wait one minute for the air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete the air bag back-up power supply.
2. Loosen main wiring connector bolt in engine compartment at LH side of dash panel and separate connectors.
3. Remove radio antenna stanchion and disconnect radio antenna lead in cable from the lead base of the radio antenna stanchion.
4. Remove both RH and LH windshield side garnish mouldings.
5. Remove screws retaining both RH and LH front door scuff plate. Lift front door scuff plates and remove front door opening weatherstrips from body flanges.
NOTE: Do not remove safety belt retaining bolts.
6. Remove RH and LH cowl side trim panels.
7. Remove three screws along the bottom of instrument panel steering column cover. Pull on instrument panel steering column cover to unsnap the three clips across top of instrument panel steering column cover. Remove instrument panel steering column cover.
8. Remove instrument cluster finish panel.
9. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder.
10. Remove four screws retaining the steering column shrouds together and remove steering column shrouds.
11. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder to prevent steering wheel from turning.
12. Disconnect wiring connectors at the multi-function switch.
13. Remove one screw and A/C evaporator register duct from under the steering column tube.
14. Disconnect the wiring connectors at the bottom of the steering column tube.
15. Disconnect the wiring connector from the ignition switch and position aside.
16. Remove the pinch bolt retaining the steering column tube to steering column lower yoke and slightly spread the steering column lower yoke with a screwdriver.
17. While supporting the steering column tube, remove the four steering column tube retaining nuts.
18. Remove the interlock cable retaining screws and shift actuator cable fitting.
19. Carefully remove the steering column tube from the vehicle.
Wiring Connectors - LH Side:
20. Loosen main wiring connector bolt at LH side of steering column opening and separate connectors.
21. Open glove compartment to the stop and unsnap glove compartment door check from RH side of glove compartment.
22. Remove three screws retaining bottom of glove compartment door hinge and glove compartment to the instrument panel.
23. Remove glove compartment from instrument panel.
A/C-Evaporator Housing Without Automatic Temperature Control:
A/C-Evaporator Housing With Automatic Temperature Control:
24. Reach through glove compartment opening and disconnect the wiring and vacuum hoses/connector from the A/C evaporator housing.
25. Remove RH cowl insulation panel and disconnect all connectors from main wiring.
26. Remove floor console panel.
27. Using a putty knife or similar tool, insert under the LH or RH corner of the instrument panel upper finish panel. Pry up on the instrument panel upper finish panel to release one snap clip.
NOTE: Protect the instrument panel surface during this procedure.
28. Unsnap the remaining four clips by pulling up by hand, working toward the opposite side of the vehicle.
29. Remove two nuts retaining LH side of instrument panel to cowl side.
30. Remove two bolts and one nut retaining the instrument panel to the instrument panel bracket.
31. Remove the nut retaining the RH side of the instrument panel to cowl side.
32. Remove the six bolts retaining the top of the instrument panel to the dash panel.
NOTE: The following steps require two technicians.
33. Carefully pull instrument panel away from windshield glass while checking for and disconnecting any remaining wiring connectors. Disengage the antenna wire grommet from the sheet metal and pull the radio antenna lead in cable through the dash panel.
INSTALLATION
1. With an assistant, place assembled instrument panel in vehicle. Connect any wiring connector disconnected before removal.
2. Install radio antenna lead in cable and install antenna wire grommet to sheet metal.
3. With an assistant, install instrument panel to position and install six bolts retaining top of instrument panel to dash panel. Tighten bolts to 10-14 Nm (89-123 lb-in).
4. Install nut retaining RH side of instrument panel to cowl side. Tighten nut to 19-25 Nm (15-18 lb-ft).
5. Install two bolts and one nut retaining instrument panel to instrument panel bracket. Tighten to 19-25 Nm (15-18 lb-ft).
6. Install two nuts retaining LH side of instrument panel to cowl side. Tighten to 19-25 Nm (15-18 lb-ft).
7. Install instrument panel upper finish panel by snapping cups into place.
8. Install console panel.
A/C-Evaporator Housing Without Automatic Temperature Control:
A/C Heater Assembly, With Automatic Temperature Control:
9. Working through glove compartment opening, connect wiring and vacuum hoses/connectors from the A/C evaporator housing.
10. Install three screws retaining bottom of glove compartment door hinge and glove compartment to instrument panel.
11. Install glove compartment door check to RH side of glove compartment.
Wiring Connectors - LH Side:
12. Connect main wiring at LH and RH cowl.
13. Connect electrical for stoplight switch.
14. Install steering column tube to vehicle.
15. Install the ignition/shifter interlock cable retaining screws and cable end. Tighten screws to 1.4-2 Nm (13-17 lb-in).
16. Install four nuts retaining steering column tube to instrument panel reinforcement. Tighten nuts to 13-17 Nm(10-12 lb-ft).
17. Align steering column lower yoke to lower steering column shaft. Install pinch bolt and tighten to 41-56 Nm (31-41 lb-ft).
18. Connect electrical connectors to steering column tube. Tighten electrical connector hold-down screw for ignition switch to 0.8-1.3 Nm (8-11 lb-in).
19. Install one screw and A/C evaporator register duct under steering column tube.
20. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder.
21. Install four screws and upper and lower steering column shrouds.
22. Install ignition switch.
23. Install instrument cluster finish panel.
24. Install instrument panel steering column cover by snapping three retaining clips into place. Install three screws along bottom of instrument panel steering column cover.
25. Install RH and LH cowl side trim panels.
26. Install front door opening weatherstrips to body flanges.
27. Install RH and LH front door scuff plates and tighten retaining screws.
28. Install RH and LH radio antenna stanchions.
29. Install radio antenna stanchion and connect radio antenna lead in cable to lead base of the radio antenna stanchion.
30. Install main wiring connectors in engine compartment at LH side of dash panel.
31. Connect battery ground cable.
32. Check all instrument panel components for proper operations.
