HORN - INTERMITTENT OPERATION - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 2/1/96
FORD:
1995-96 ESCORT
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1995-96 TRACER
ISSUE:
The horn may work intermittently at various steering wheel positions on some vehicles. This may be caused by an intermittent horn ground through the steering wheel bearing.
ACTION:
Install a redundant ground to the horn circuit by installing a clip to the steering column tube. The redundant ground should reduce the possibility of an intermittent ground in the horn circuit. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Install a clip (F5CZ-3F686-AA) onto the steering column tube as shown in Figure 1. A screwdriver or a pair of pliers should be used to snap the clip into position. Make sure that a small amount of dielectric grease is applied to the contact point prior to installation.
