Ignition Timing: Adjustments
1. Apply the parking brake and ensure that the vehicle is in the NEUTRAL (N) or PARK (P) range.2. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
3. Turn OFF all electrical loads and accessories.
4. Connect Rotunda Timing Analyzer 164-R0257 or equivalent.
Data Link Connector:
5. Use a jumper wire to connect the ground terminal to the TEN terminal on the Data Link Connector (DLC).
Data Link Connector:
6. Use Rotunda 88 Digital Multimeter 105-R0053 or equivalent to connect the tachometer positive lead to the IG terminal on the DLC and the tachometer negative lead to the negative battery post.
Timing Marks:
7. Use Rotunda Timing Analyzer 164-R0257 or equivalent to inspect the ignition timing. The ignition timing should be 10 degrees (+/- 1 degree) before top dead center at 700-800 rpm. The yellow mark on the crankshaft pulley should be aligned with the corresponding mark on the engine front cover.
8. If the marks are not aligned, loosen the distributor bolts and turn the distributor until the ignition timing is within specification.
Distributor Bolt:
9. Tighten the distributor bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-19 lb ft).
10. Check to make sure the timing did not change while tightening the distributor bolts.
11. Remove the jumper wire from the DLC.
12. Remove the timing analyzer.
13. Remove the tachometer.
