Continuous Memory Self-Test
NOTE: This procedure is written assuming the use of a New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester. If a generic OBD II scan tool is used, it will be necessary to follow the instructions supplied by the manufacturer of the scan tool. The purpose of this mode is to enable the scan tool to obtain stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). All scan tools (NGS and generic) are capable of obtaining, converting and displaying OBD II emission related DTCs (DTCs that illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light [MIL]) from a vehicle. These DTCs are transmitted in response to an OBD II Mode O3 request. The DTC, descriptive text, or both will be displayed. Specific menu access to emission related DTCs (MIL only) is determined by the scan tool manufacturer.
ACCESSING EMISSION RELATED CONTINUOUS MEMORY DTCs
Emission related DTC retrieval can easily be performed by any scan tool without the need to enter any specific character strings. The specific instructions to retrieve and display emission related Continuous Memory DTCs will depend on the scan tool manufacturer. DTC retrieval is conducted with the ignition key ON and the engine OFF.
