Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Crankshaft Position Sensor.:

The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is a magnetic transducer that detects crankshaft pulley rotation, and sends a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The CKP signal is used to adjust fuel injection and ignition timing, and for misfire monitoring.

The CKP sensor uses a plate with four projections rotating past the sensor to magnetically sense the crankshaft rotation, and converts this into an output voltage signal. Since this signal is generated directly at the crankshaft pulley, it is very accurate, and not influenced by timing belt looseness or camshaft misalignment.
