^ NOISE - "RUMBLING" NOISE FROM ROOF AREA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ROOF RACK

FORD:
1996 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996 TRACER

ISSUE:
There may be a "rumbling" noise coming from the roof area at highway speeds on vehicles equipped with a roof rack. This may be caused by the crossbar creating a turbulence, causing the roof panel to vibrate.

ACTION:
Install an acrylic foam tape (F7CZ-7455178-AA) along the crossbar. The acrylic foam tape should change the turbulence, reducing the possibility of noise made by the roof panel. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Refer to Figure 1.

1. Clean the bottom of the front crossbar of rack with alcohol and wipe dry with a lint-free towel.

2. Locate the Torx head screws on the underside of the front crossbar stanchions.

3. Peel the adhesive backing off of the acrylic foam tape (F7CZ-7455178-AA).

4. Center the acrylic foam tape on the underside of the crossbar an equal distance between the Torx head screws from side-to-side and front-to-back.

5. Hand apply the acrylic foam tape by rubbing it on with firm hand pressure.
