Stall Speed Test
This test checks the operation of the following items:
- torque converter one-way clutch.
- forward clutch.
- low/intermediate clutch.
- low one-way clutch (7A089).
- low/intermediate one-way clutch.
- engine performance.
WARNING: APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE FIRMLY WHILE PERFORMING EACH STALL TEST TO PREVENT VEHICLE DAMAGE OR PERSONAL INJURY.
CAUTION: Always perform line pressure test procedures prior to performing Stall Speed Test. If line pressure is LOW at stall, DO NOT perform Stall Speed Test or further transaxle damage will occur.
Note: The stall test should be performed with the engine and transaxle at normal operating temperatures.
1. Connect tachometer to the engine.
2. Press accelerator pedal to the floor (WOT) in each range. Record rpm reached in each range.
Stall speeds should be 1940-2300 RPM (The stall speed in reverse will be lower).
CAUTION: After testing each of the following ranges OD, D and R move the gearshift lever to N (Neutral) and run engine for about 15 seconds to allow the torque converter to cool before testing the next range to prevent damage to the torque converter.
CAUTION: Do not maintain WOT in any range for more than FIVE seconds or damage to the torque converter may occur.
Note: Prolonged usage of this procedure may set Diagnostic Trouble Code P0712 or P1783. After performing Stall Speed Test procedures run on-board diagnostic test and clear DTCs from memory.
Stall Speed High (Slip) Chart:
If stall speeds were too high, refer to the chart shown. If stall speeds were too low, first check engine idle speed and tuneup.
