With Manufacturer's Scan Tool

NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide procedures to retrieve or clear trouble codes without the New Generation Star (NGS) tester.

The anti-lock brake system has on-board diagnostic capabilities via the serial data link connector. The Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be retrieved in the following manner:

1. Connect the Rotunda New Generation Star Tester 007-00500 or equivalent to the data link connector under the instrument panel to the left of the steering column.
2. Plug the tester into the cigar lighter.
3. Make sure the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
4. Follow the instructions on tester screen. (Choose correct vehicle and model year, proceed to "diagnostic data link" menu item, choose "ABS (Anti-Lock Brake Module)", choose "retrieve/clear DTCs", press START).
5. If the tester displays any DTCs, turn the dial to highlight each one, and read DTC description.
6. Write down all DTCs.
7. If New Generation Star Tester reports "System passed, no DTCs", proceed to the Anti-Lock Quick Check Sheet. ABS Module Harness Connector Electrical Quick Check Sheet
8. Select "On Demand Self Test" from tester menu. Run the on demand self test.
9. Write down all DTCs.
10. Compare "on demand self test" DTCs to those output by "retrieve codes" command.
a. First service any DTCs output by "on demand self test." These are existing failures that can be detected with vehicle not moving.
b. Then service any DTCs output by "retrieve codes" command. These are intermittent failures that can only be detected while the vehicle is in motion.
11. Refer to the Anti-Lock Brake Control Module On-Board Diagnostic Trouble Code Index to determine which pinpoint test to perform for each DTC. Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions

If you get the response "Link Communication Error, Module Not Responding" when trying to retrieve DTCs, it means the tester is not able to communicate with the anti-lock brake control module. It does not mean the anti-lock brake control module is defective. Check the following items when this message occurs:

1. Confirm that the ignition switch is in RUN position.
2. Check the fuse junction panel and power distribution box for blown fuses.
3. Check the New Generation Star Tester connection to the data link connector.

If none of these actions will restore the communication link, refer to Pinpoint Test E. E No Module Communications
