B: Steering Does Not Vary With Vehicle Speed

B1 Check GEM Vehicle Speed PID
- NGS installed.
- Access GEM PID VSS_GEM.
- Drive vehicle while observing VSS_GEM PID.
Does PID change and reflect vehicle speed when compared to speedometer?
Yes
PERFORM on board diagnostic self test.
SERVICE any DTC retrieved.
REPEAT self test and test drive to confirm service.
If symptom still present, condition is mechanical.
Go to Symptom Chart Steering System Diagnosis Diagnosis by Symptom
or Symptom Chart Power Steering Pump Noise Diagnosis. Pump Noise Diagnosis
No.
TURN vehicle OFF.
Go to B2.

B2 Check Circuit 679 (GY/BK) For Open
- Disconnect vehicle speed sensor connector.
- Disconnect fuse junction panel connector C3. Schematic and Connector Views Used With Pinpoint Tests
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between fuse junction panel Pin C3-7, Circuit 679 (GY/BK) and vehicle speed sensor connector Circuit 679 (GY/BK).
Is resistance 5 Ohms or less?
Yes
Go to B3.
No
SERVICE Circuit 679 (GY/BK) for open circuit.
RESTORE vehicle.
REPEAT B1.

B3 Check Circuit 679 (GY/BK) For Short To Ground
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance from Pin C3-7, Circuit 679 (GY/BK) to a known ground.
Is resistance 10,000 Ohms or more?
Yes
Go to B4.
No.
SERVICE Circuit 679 (GY/BK) for short to ground.
RESTORE vehicle.
REPEAT B1.

B4 Check Circuit 679 (GY/BK) For Short To Battery
- Using voltmeter connected to a known ground, measure voltage at Pin C3-7, Circuit 679 (GY/BK).
Is B+ voltage present?
Yes
SERVICE Circuit 679 (GY/BK) for short to battery.
RESTORE vehicle.
REPEAT B1.
No
Go to B5.

B5 Check Fuse Junction Panel For Open Circuit
- Disconnect GEM fuse junction panel connector C1.
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between C1-9 and C3-7.
Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes
Go to B6.
No
REPLACE fuse junction panel.
RESTORE vehicle.
REPEAT B1.

B6 Check Fuse Junction Panel For Internal Short To Battery
- Disconnect GEM from fuse junction panel.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.
- Measure voltage between GEM fuse junction panel connector Pin C1-9 and a known ground.
Is B+ voltage present?
Yes
REPLACE internally shorted fuse junction panel.
RESTORE vehicle.
REPEAT B1.
No
GO to B7.

B7 Check Fuse Junction Panel For Short To Ground
- Using ohmmeter connected to known ground, measure resistance at Pin C1-9.
Is resistance less than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
REPLACE grounded fuse junction panel.
RESTORE vehicle.
REPEAT B1.
No
REPLACE vehicle speed sensor. Service and Repair
RESTORE vehicle.
REPEAT B1.
