Halfshaft Assembly

Halfshaft Assembly

CAUTION: Do not begin this removal procedure unless the following parts are available:

- a new front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477)
- a new lower control arm to steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut
- a new driveshaft bearing retainer circlip (3Z498)
Once removed, these parts must not be reused during assembly. Their torque holding ability or retention capability is diminished during removal.

Removal-LH

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.

3. Insert a steel rod into front disc brake rotor (1125) to prevent turning. Remove the front axle wheel hub retainer.
4. Remove nut and disengage stabilizer bar link (5K484) from shock absorber using Tie Rod End Remover TOOL-3290-D or equivalent.

5. Remove cotter pin and nut and remove tie rod end (3A1 30) from front wheel knuckle (3K1 86) using Tie Rod End Remover TOOL-3290-D or equivalent.
6. Remove lower control arm to front wheel spindle pinch bolt and nut. Remove front suspension lower arm ball joint (3050) from front wheel knuckle.

7. CAUTION: Never use a hammer to separate the halfshaft from the front wheel hub (1104). Damage to the outboard front wheel drive shaft joint threads and internal components may result.

Separate the halfshaft from wheel hub using Front Hub Remover/Replacer T81P-1104-C, Metric Hub Remover Adapter T83P-1104-BH.

8. Install CV Joint Puller Extension T86P-3514-A2 into CV Joint Puller T86P-3514-A1 and hand tighten. Install Impact Slide Hammer T50T-100-A into extension.

Tool Installation for Halfshaft Removal

9. Install CV Joint Puller T86P-3514-A1 (part of T86P-3514-A) between the inboard CV joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing (4B413) and case (7005).

10. Remove halfshaft from case. Remove halfshaft from vehicle as described.

Removal-RH

1. Perform Steps 1 through 8 of the LH Halfshaft removal procedure.
2. Position CV Joint Puller T86P-3514-A1 and CV Joint Puller Extension T86P-3514-A2 (part of T86P-3514-A) and Impact Slide Hammer T50T-100-A between inboard CV joint and intermediate halfshaft.

3. Remove RH halfshaft from the intermediate shaft. Remove halfshaft from vehicle.

Installation-RH

1. CAUTION: DO NOT reuse driveshaft bearing retainer circlip. A new driveshaft bearing retainer circlip must be installed each time the inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing is installed onto the intermediate shaft.

NOTE: To install the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip properly, start one end in the groove and work the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip over the intermediate halfshaft end and into the groove. This will avoid over-expanding the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip.

Install a new driveshaft bearing retainer circlip onto the intermediate shaft.

2. Carefully align splines of front wheel driveshaft joint (3B414) with the splines of the intermediate shaft. Push RH front wheel driveshaft joint onto intermediate shaft.
3. Carefully align splines of front wheel driveshaft joint with splines in wheel hub and push the front wheel driveshaft joint (3B41 3) into the wheel hub as far as possible.

4. CAUTION: A new front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) must be installed.

Install front axle wheel hub retainer. Manually thread the front axle wheel hub retainer on as far as possible.

5. Install front suspension lower arm ball joint into front wheel knuckle. Install a new lower control arm-to-knuckle pinch bolt and nut. Tighten nut to 74-92 Nm (54-67 lb-ft).
6. Install tie rod end into front wheel knuckle. Install nut and tighten to 28 Nm (20 lb-ft). Install cotter pin.
7. Install stabilizer bar link and new nut. Tighten nut to 20-32 Nm (14-23 lb-ft).
8. Install wheel and tire assembly. Tighten lug nuts to 85 Nm (62 lb-ft).
9. Lower vehicle.
10. Tighten front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) to 340 Nm (246 lb-ft).

Installation-LH

1. CAUTION: DO NOT reuse driveshaft bearing retainer circlip. A new driveshaft bearing retainer circlip must be installed each time the inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing is installed into the differential.

NOTE: To properly install the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip properly, start one end in the groove and work the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip over the inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing end and into the groove. This will avoid over-expanding the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip.

Install a new driveshaft bearing retainer circlip on the inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing.

2. NOTE: A non-metallic mallet may be used to aid in seating the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip into the differential side gear groove. If a mallet is necessary, tap only on the outboard CV joint stub shaft.

NOTE: Use care to prevent damage to the inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing seal (4B416).

Carefully align splines of inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing with the splines in the differential side gear (4236). Exerting some force, push inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing into differential until the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip is felt to seat in the differential side gear.
3. Carefully align splines of front wheel driveshaft joint with splines in wheel hub and push the shaft into the wheel hub as far as possible.

4. CAUTION: A new front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) must be installed.

Install front axle wheel hub retainer. Manually thread the front axle wheel hub retainer on as far as possible.

5. Install front suspension lower arm ball joint into front wheel knuckle. Install a new lower control arm-to-knuckle pinch bolt and nut. Tighten nut to 74-92 Nm (54-67 lb-ft).
6. Install tie rod end into front wheel knuckle. Install nut and tighten to 28 Nm (20 lb-ft). Install cotter pin.
7. Install stabilizer bar link and new nut. Tighten nut to 20-32 Nm (14-23 lb-ft).
8. Install wheel and tire assembly. Tighten lug nuts to 85 Nm (62 lb-ft).
9. Lower vehicle.
10. Tighten front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) to 340 Nm (246 lb-ft).
