TRANSAXLE - CD4E SERVICE UNITS - LOW AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

FORD:
1994-96 PROBE
1995-96 CONTOUR

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1995-96 MYSTIQUE

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to provide added text and figures to better identify the transaxles that require attention.

ISSUE:
CD4E service transaxles are shipped with a reduced amount of Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) and are about 5 liters (5 quarts) low in quantity. These service transaxles are identified by a tag affixed to the transaxle stating "THIS TRANSMISSION IS SHIPPED PARTIALLY FILLED. FILL WITH 5 QUARTS OF FLUID BEFORE STARTING ENGINE, THEN TOP OFF TO FULL MARK" (Figure 1).

ACTION:
For CD4E service transaxies only, excluding "Ford Quality Renewal" transaxles, add 5 liters (5 quarts) of Mercon(R) Multi-Purpose ATF after the halfshafts are installed and before the engine is started. Fluid will seep out of the halfshaft seals if fluid is added before the halfshafts are installed. A top-off procedure needs to be conducted after the engine is started. For proper fill procedure, refer to the appropriate year Probe Service Manual, Section 07-01A, or the Contour/Mystique Service Manual, Section 07-01. Always check the transaxle fluid level and adjust it necessary.

CD4E service transaxles supplied by the "Ford Quality Renewal" activity are shipped fully filled with ATF. These transaxles are identified with a "Ford Quality Renewal" sticker and wire tagged replacement instructions. Refer to Figure 2. This TSB does not apply to these transaxles.

Transaxles shipped with "Ford Factory Remanufactured Product" stickers (Figure 3) attached to the shipping container and the torque converter housing are also shipped partially filled.

CAUTION:
FAILURE TO ADD ADDITIONAL 5 LITERS (5 QUARTS) OF MERCON(R) MULTI-PURPOSE ATF BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE WILL RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE CD4E TRANSAXLE DUE TO LACK OF LUBRICATION.
