Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then positive cable. Wait at least one minute for air bag backup power supply to deplete.
2. Remove the air bag module screws, turning steering wheel 90° one direction to remove first screw, then 180° in opposite direction to remove the second screw.
3. Disconnect the air bag wire harness from driver side air bag module, then remove the module from the steering wheel.
4. Center the front wheels to the straight ahead position, then disconnect the speed control wire harness from the steering wheel.
5. Remove the steering wheel bolt.
6. Route the air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through the steering wheel opening while lifting the steering wheel off the shaft.
7. Reverse the procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
b. Ensure steering wheel and steering shaft alignment marks are aligned and air bag contact wire is not pinched.
c. Torque new steering wheel bolt to 37 ft lb.
d. Torque the air bag module screws to 8-10 ft lb.
e Verify the air bag warning indicator.
