ISSUE:
Harsh shift and/or harsh engagement may occur on some vehicles. This would be accompanied by Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 628 or PO741 and possibly a flashing Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL). Proper diagnostic procedures are necessary to avoid repeat repairs.
ACTION:
Diagnose and repair the shifting concern. Refer to the following Diagnostic and Service Procedure for details.
DIAGNOSTIC AND SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Connect the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester and retrieve and record all DTCs.
2. Clear all codes from vehicle memory and proceed to Step 3.
3. Diagnose and repair any codes other than Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) system performance (DTC 628 or PO741) or transmission over-temperature (DTC 657 or P1783). Pay close attention to Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor or Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) related codes.
4. Using NGS in diagnostic data link mode, monitor the following Parameter Identification Display (PID):
^ PID for Turbine Speed Sensor: TSS
^ PID for engine rpm: RPM
NOTE:
1995 PROBES BUILT FROM 12/6/94 THROUGH 3/16/95 WILL REQUIRE TSB ARTICLE 95-11-4 TO BE PERFORMED IN ORDER TO RECEIVE PID DATA THROUGH NGS.
NOTE:
FOR THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE, DO NOT ATTACH THE TSS SENSOR LEAD OF THE TESTER TO THE TRANSAXLE. PLACE THE TRANSMISSION TESTER IN BENCH MODE. THE VEHICLE MUST BE PARKED AND ENGINE OFF TO PERFORM BENCH MODE TESTING.
5. Connect the Transmission Tester with the CD4E Cable/Overlay.
6. Depress TCC activate button. Does the status light turn green?
^ Yes Proceed to Step 7.
^ No - Check connection and retest. If light still does not activate, replace Solenoid Body (-7G391-). Road test the vehicle to verify repair.
7. Prepare for the test drive by switching the Transmission Tester to Drive mode.
NOTE:
DO NOT CYCLE THE "O/D CANCEL" OR "ECONOMY/SPORT" SWITCHES DURING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.
8. Place the vehicle shift lever in the "O/D" position. Using the Transmission Tester, manually upshift the vehicle into 4th gear while accelerating to approximately 105 km/h (65 mph), local speed limits apply. Maintain 105 km/h (65 mph) during Steps 9 and 10.
9. While observing engine rpm on the NGS press and hold the TCC button on the Transmission Tester. Does the status light on the tester turn green?
^ Yes Proceed to Step 10.
^ No - Check connection and retest. If light still does not activate, refer to Step 6.
10. While maintaining 105 km/h (65 mph) in 4th gear, press and hold the TCC button on the Transmission Tester. Wait 5 seconds and observe engine rpm and TSS sensor rpm on the NGS. Accelerate at half throttle. Does turbine speed (TSS) remain within 50 rpm of engine rpm during acceleration?
^ Yes - Suspected pump body separator plate gasket blow-out. Proceed to Step 11.
^ No - Replace Torque Converter (-7902-). Road test vehicle after repair.
11. Remove pump assembly from transaxle. Disassemble pump support from pump body, being careful not to damage pump body separator plate gasket. Compare the gasket to Figure 1. Is the pump body separator plate gasket blown-out?
^ Yes - Proceed to Step 12.
^ No - No hydraulic concern exists within the TCC system. Rebuild pump assembly with new gasket and reseal transaxle. Road test after repair.
12. After removing the transaxle from vehicle, look into the transaxle from the pump side. Inspect the aluminum bushing in the forward/direct/coast clutch cylinder assembly. Is there any visible damage to the aluminum bushing?
^ Yes - Replace transaxle. Do not repair (except for 1997 vehicles, repair all 1997 vehicles until remanufactured transaxles become available).
^ No - Replace Pump Assembly (F4RZ-7A103-A) and Filter (F3RZ-7A098-A). Clean and reseal transaxle. Inspect all friction elements for distress. Inspect the internal splines of the forward/direct/coast clutch cylinder for wear. Road test vehicle after repair.
