WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS. Past Calibrations are also included.

ISSUE:
The "Check Engine" Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306 may be stored in continuous memory. There may be no driveability concerns present. The misfire monitor is looking for concerns before the engine is warm and stabilized.

ACTION:
Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. Refer to the Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. For all concerns except MIL On, conduct normal diagnostics and repair as required. Upon completion of repairs, proceed to Step 3. For ML On concerns, proceed to Step 2.

2. Perform an EEC Diagnostic Quick Test to check for DTCs in memory:

^ For all DTCs present except the ones listed in the Title, complete normal diagnostics and repair as required, then go to Step 3. Refer to the appropriate model 1996 Powertrain/Drivetrain Service Manual and the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) Service Manual for detailed diagnostic and repair procedures

^ For the DTCs listed in the Title, complete normal diagnostics and repair as required. If no repairs were indicated, proceed to Step 3. If repairs were required, first proceed to Step 3, then verify the concern was resolved after the PCM has been reprogrammed by rechecking DTCs after completing a test drive of the vehicle.

If any DTCs return, repair as required.

3. Check decal to verify vehicle does not have the latest calibration. If it does not, reprogram the PCM with the appropriate calibration per the following Recalibration Cross Reference Chart using the latest level calibration CD-ROM or later.

NOTE:
PCM REPLACEMENT IS NOT AUTHORIZED BY THIS TSB. REFER TO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL/EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS (PC!ED) SERVICE MANUAL FOR APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES IF PCM HARDWARE CONCERNS EXIST.

NOTE:
IF YOU ENCOUNTER DIFFICULTIES WHEN REPROGRAMMING, REFER TO TSB 96-25-11 FOR DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS. PCMS SHOULD ONLY BE REPLACED WHEN THEY CAN NO LONGER BE REPROGRAMMED OR THEY ARE DAMAGED.

Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8252 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
