WARNING: Exhaust system normal operating temperature is very high. Never work around or attempt to service any or part of system until it has cooled. Use special care when working around a three way catalytic converter. These units heat to high temperature in only a short period of engine operation.1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then engine control sensor extension wire from righthand heated oxygen sensor.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove alternator and bracket.
3. Remove three way catalytic converter and Y pipe as follows:
a. Remove converter outlet flange nuts, then muffler and converter outlet gasket from converter.
b. Remove converter nuts and exhaust pipe flange hold down springs.
c. Remove converter and inlet gasket from Y pipe, then discard gasket.
d. Remove front and rear Y pipe flange fasteners from exhaust manifolds.
e. Remove stud bolt and nut retainer from oil pan, then Y pipe.
4. Remove righthand halfshaft support bearing bracket from support bearing and cylinder block.
5. Remove heated oxygen sensor from exhaust manifold using oxygen sensor wrench T94P-9472-A, or equivalent. If excessive force is necessary to remove sensor, lubricate sensor with penetrating oil before removal.
6. Loosen EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube from exhaust manifold.
7. Remove exhaust manifold nuts from cylinder head studs, then manifold and manifold gasket from engine.
Exhaust Manifold Tightening Sequence:
8. Reverse procedure to install. Torque exhaust manifold nuts in sequence, to 13-16 ft lb.
