^ NOISE - "SQUEAL" NOISE FROM WATER PUMP AT 650-700 RPMS - VEHICLES WITH 2.5L ENGINE BUILT THROUGH 4/1/96

FORD:
1995-96 CONTOUR

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1995-96 MYSTIQUE

ISSUE:
A "squealing" noise may come from the rear of the engine at the water pump area at 650-700 rpms. This may be caused by the water pump seal.

ACTION:
Determine if the noise is coming from the water pump area. Check for proper pulley and belt alignment. Replace the water pump with a revised water pump which has a revised seal to reduce the possibility of squealing. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Warm the vehicle completely.

2. Listen for a squeal at idle rpm (650-700) in the water pump area. If a squeal noise is heard, isolate the noise. With the engine off, tighten the drive belt tensioner bolt torque to 8-12 N-m (6-9 lb-ft). Restart the engine and confirm the noise still exists.

3. With the engine off, feel the inside pulley to camshaft. The pulley should be flush to the end of the camshaft. If not, remove the pulley per the appropriate Contour/Mystique Service Manual, Section 03-01B and reinstall. If the pulley alignment is correct, replace the Water Pump (F63Z-8501-AA) following the procedures outlined in the appropriate Service Manual, Section 03-01B.

NOTE:
WHEN REFILLING THE COOLING SYSTEM, DO NOT ADD COOLANT WHEN THE ENGINE IS IDLING. THIS MAY CAUSE THE SEAL TO RUN DRY, DAMAGING THE SEAL AND RESULTING IN A REPEAT REPAIR. BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE REFILLING PROCEDURES OUTLINED IN THE SERVICE MANUAL, PAGE 03-03-21.
