CARPET - POOR FIT AND/OR PULLS FROM UNDERNEATH COWL SIDE TRIM PANEL - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 10/18/96

ISSUE:
The carpet may fit poorly and/or the carpet may be pulling out from underneath the cowl side trim panel. This may be caused by the carpet being too narrow.

ACTION:
Install a foam block insert under the carpet or replace the carpet. The foam block should keep the carpet from pulling out. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

If the carpet is pulled from under the RH side cowl side trim panel only, carpet replacement is not necessary. Install a Foam Block Insert (F6RZ-541 3S000-AA) under the carpet pad directly in front of the passenger seat following the procedure as outlined below.

1. Remove the weatherstrip from the lower edge of the right side door opening.

2. Remove the attaching parts from the right front interior trim panel (kick panel).

3. Position the interior trim panel up away from the carpet.

NOTE:
DO NOT OVEREXTEND THE TRIM PANEL AS PERMANENT DISTORTION MAY OCCUR.

4. Raise the edge of the carpet and carpet pad to expose the wire harness and floor pan directly in front of the passenger RH front seat support.

5. Install the foam block insert (thick end to rear) into the floor pan depression surrounding the wire harness. The insert should fit snugly over the harness and into the corner of the floor pan.

6. Reassemble the vehicle by reversing the order.

If the carpet is pulled away from any other location, replace the carpet following the procedure outlined in the appropriate year Contour/Mystique Service Manual, Section 01-05, and install the foam block insert per Step 5 in the above procedure.
