Driver Door Latch Inspection and Replacement

Affected Vehicles:
1996 Aerostar, Explorer, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car, Thunderbird and Cougar

Inspection





1. Inspect date code on left front door latch. See Figure 1

a. If the date code is between 6B22 and 6C22, the latch must be replaced.

b. If the date code is other than 6B22 through 6C22, the latch is OK. Return vehicle to customer.

Door Latch Replacement

1. Install Rotunda Memory Saver 014-R1064, or equivalent, then disconnect battery cables.

2. Open door and remove left front door interior trim panel. Refer to appropriate Service Manual, Section 01-05.

3. Remove door inside handle, then disconnect door lock cylinder release lever.

4. Disconnect front door latch actuating rod.

5. Disconnect illuminated entry electrical connector from door latch.

6. Disconnect front door latch control to lock cylinder rod.

NOTE:
This step applies to power door lock equipped vehicles only. For manual door lock equipped vehicles, go to Step 8.

NOTE:
You must drill out retaining rivet in order to remove lock actuator assembly. Do not remove door lock actuator from bracket.

7. Remove door lock actuator assembly as follows:

a. Using a drift awl, punch out mandrel of rivet. Mandrel must not contact door latch actuator assembly.

b. Using a 1/4-inch drill bit, drill out remainder of rivet.

c. Remove door lock actuator and bracket as an assembly.

8. Remove door latch from door.

9. Reverse Steps 1 through 12 to install new door latch, noting the following:

a. Use supplied door latch screws to attach door latch. On all models except Explorer, tighten screws to 4-8 N-m (35-70 in-lb). On Explorer models, tighten screws to 8-12 N-m (6-8 ft-lb).

b. Use supplied rivet to attach door lock actuator assembly.

Note:
On Aerostar models, the replacement door latch includes only the door ajar switch, cable and remote assembly. The anti-theft shield must be transferred from the old latch.

On Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis models, the replacement door latch includes only the door ajar switch. The anti-theft shield must be transferred from the old latch, if applicable.

On Explorer models, the replacement door latch includes both switches. The anti-theft shield must be transferred from the old latch, if applicable.

On Town Car, Thunderbird and Cougar models, the replacement latch does not come with any switches or anti-theft shield. All components must be transferred from the old latch.
