Canister Purge Control Valve: Description and Operation
Purpose
To purge the fuel vapors from the evaporative emission canister into the engine.
Features
The evaporative emission canister purge valve (EVAP CANP) is:
^ in-line with the evaporative emission canister and controls the flow of fuel vapors out of the evaporative emission canister.
^ normally closed.
Operation
When the engine is shut OFF, vapors from the fuel tank flow into the evaporative emission canister. After the engine is started, the evaporative emission canister purge valve is engaged and opens, drawing air through the evaporative emission canister, purging the fuel vapors from the evaporative emission canister into the engine. With the evaporative emission canister purge valve open, vapors from the fuel tank are routed directly into the engine.
NOTE: The evaporative emission canister purge/Vapor Management valve also serves as a feedback device for the Windstar OBD II system.
