Many dealers have experienced engine failures immediately after performing a front cover gasket replacement. The cause of almost all of these failures is oil contamination. These revisions to the 99B29 repair procedure can be used when repairing any 3.8L or 4.2L engine (not just Owner Notification Program 99B29 affected vehicles). Dealers should be aware that only engine damage caused by the front cover gasket is covered under 99B29.
DURING THE FRONT COVER GASKET REPLACEMENT, CLEANLINESS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! ANY DEBRIS THAT ENTERS THE OIL PAN, THE OIL PASSAGES IN THE BLOCK, OR THE PASSAGES IN THE FRONT COVER CAN CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE.
