Removal and Installation
Removal
1. From inside vehicle, remove nuts retaining steering column tube boot to cowl panel.
2. Remove two bolts retaining steering column gear input shaft coupling to power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly.
3. Set steering column tube boot aside. Remove pinch bolt at power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly and remove steering column gear input shaft coupling.
4. Raise vehicle on a twin post hoist and remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
5. Support vehicle with jackstands under rear edge of front sub-frame (5C145).
6. Remove tie rod cotter pins and nuts, and remove tie rod end from LH front wheel knuckle and RH front wheel knuckle.
7. Remove tie rod end from front wheel spindle tie rod (3280).
Mark position of jam nut to maintain alignment.
8. Remove nuts from steering gear-to-front subframe retaining bolts.
9. Remove rear subframe-to-body retaining bolts.
10. Remove exhaust system flex tube-to-dual converter Y pipe attachment.
11. Lower twin post hoist carefully until rear sub-frame (5R003) separates from body, approximately 102 mm (4 inches).
12. Remove heat shield band and fold shield down.
13. Disconnect VAPS electrical connectors.
14. Rotate power steering short rack to clear bolts from front sub-frame and pull left to facilitate line fitting removal.
15. Place a drain pan under vehicle and remove line fittings.
16. Remove LH stabilizer bar link (5K484).
17. Remove power steering short rack assembly through LH wheel well.
Installation
1. Install new Teflon (TM) O-rings on line fittings.
2. Place steering gear retaining bolts in steering gear housing.
3. Install power steering short rack through LH wheel well.
4. Install power steering line fittings to power steering short rack assembly.
5. Install VAPS electrical connectors.
6. Position power steering short rack into front sub-frame.
7. Install tie rod ends onto front wheel spindle tie rod.
8. Install band on heat shield.
9. Install tie rod ends to LH front wheel knuckle and RH front wheel knuckle. Install nuts and new cotter pins.
10. Install LH stabilizer bar link.
11. Raise hoist until rear sub-frame contacts body.
12. Install rear subframe retaining bolts.
13. Install steering gear-to-front subframe nuts and tighten to 115-135 Nm (85-100 ft-lbs.).
14. Install exhaust system flex tube (5G203) to dual converter Y pipe (5F250).
15. Install tire and wheel assemblies.
Tighten lug nuts (1012) to 115-142 Nm (85-105 ft-lbs.).
16. Remove jackstands and lower vehicle.
17. From inside vehicle, push steering column tube boot end out of vehicle and install over steering gear housing.
18. Install steering column gear input shaft coupling to power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly.
Tighten bolt to 41-51 Nm (30-38 ft-lbs.).
19. Install inner steering column tube boot to cowl panel.
20. Install steering column gear input shaft coupling to power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly.
21. Fill with Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M2C33-F.
22. Bleed power steering system.
23. Check system for leaks and proper operation.
24. Adjust toe setting.
