Ignition Control Module: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Remove distributor cap and position distributor cap with ignition wires aside, away from the work area.
2. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring connector from Ignition Control Module (ICM).
3. Remove distributor from engine.
4. Place distributor on work bench. Remove two ignition control module mounting screws.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to lift ignition control module from mounting surface prior to moving entire ignition control module toward distributor flange as the pins will break at the distributor/module connector.
5. Pull RH side of ignition control module down distributor mounting flange and back up to disengage ignition control module terminals from connector in distributor housing. The ignition control module may be pulled toward flange and away from distributor.
INSTALLATION
1. Coat metal base plate of ignition control module uniformly with Silicone Dielectric Compound, D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A approximately 0.79 mm (1/32 inch) thick.
2. Place ignition control module on distributor housing mounting flange.
Ignition Control Module:
3. Carefully position ignition control module toward distributor housing and align the three distributor connector pins.
4. Install two ignition control module retaining screws and tighten to 1.7-4.0 Nm (15-35 in lb) starting with upper RH screw.
5. Install distributor into engine.
6. Install distributor cap. Tighten distributor cap mounting screws to 2.0-2.6 Nm (18-23 in lb).
7. Install engine control sensor wiring connector to ignition control module.
8. Set initial engine ignition timing.
