ISSUE:
Bumpers that are being replaced or repaired (scratched, peeling, blistered, or gouged) may be repaired using Ford recommended service procedures. The recommended procedures are necessary to maintain good adhesion to the Thermal Plastic Olefin (TPO) bumper material.
ACTION:
If service is required, use one of the recommended service procedures and ONLY the approved materials listed in this TSB.
SCRATCHED, PEELING, OR BLISTERED BUMPER
1. Using a DA sander with 400 grit sand paper, loosen and remove as much of the existing paint as required, minimizing TPO surface exposure.
NOTE:
ANY EXPOSED SUBSTRATE WILL REQUIRE ADHESION PROMOTER PRIMER.
2. Scuff sand the entire bumper with a red Scotchbrite pad.
3. Thoroughly clean the bumper using a pre-paint plastic prep material. Wipe the bumper clean and tack off. (Use only approved products from Table A.)
4. Apply two (2) wet coats of plastic adhesion promoter. Allow for appropriate flash time. (Use only approved products from Table B.)
NOTE:
NEVER SAND ADHESION PROMOTER BEFORE APPLYING BASECOAT MATERIAL.
5. Apply 2-3 coats of basecoat material to hiding following paint manufacturer's label instructions. Allow for appropriate flash times. (Use only approved products from Table C.)
6. Apply two (2) full wet coats of clearcoat following paint manufacturer's label instructions. Allow for appropriate flash times. (Use only approved products from Table D.)
7. Bake for 30-45 minutes at 140~F (60~C) or air-dry overnight before installing parts.
PAINT PROCEDURE FOR TPO SERVICE BODY PARTS (PRE-PRIMED)
1. Wash the mouldings with soap and water.
2. Lightly scuff the parts with a red Scotchbrite pad only.
NOTE:
DO NOT USE SANDPAPER.
3. Wipe down the mouldings with a pre-paint plastic prep material and tack off before painting. (Use only approved products from Table B.)
4. Mix and apply 2-3 coats of basecoat material. Let flash per manufacturer's recommendations. (Use only approved products from Table C.)
5. Mix and apply two (2) wet coats of clearcoat and let flash per manufacturer's recommendations. (Use only approved products from Table D.)
6. Force dry the parts for 30-45 minutes at 140~F (60~C) or air-dry overnight before installing parts.
