TRANSAXLE - CD4E - FLUID LEAK FROM PUMP BODY SEAL

FORD:
1994-95 PROBE
1995 CONTOUR

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1995 MYSTIQUE

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may leak fluid from the pump-to-case interface area of the transaxle. This may be caused by the pump body seal being rolled or pinched during installation.

ACTION:
If a fluid leak is detected in the pump-to-case interface area, refer to the following service procedure to replace the pump body seal.

This procedure does not require complete teardown of the transaxle and should only be used for leak concerns. If replacement of the pump body or pump support is required, the transaxle must be disassembled and reassembled following the Service Manual procedure. The components will be misaligned if this repair is performed while the transaxle is still in the vehicle.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle. Refer to Section 07-01 of the appropriate Service Manual for removal procedures.

2. Remove the torque converter from the transaxle and drain. Refer to Figure 1.

3. Use a 3/8" drive ratchet and remove the transaxle drain plug from the transaxle case. Allow transaxle to drain completely. Refer to Figure 2.

4. Remove the pump drive shaft. Refer to Figure 3.

5. Position the transaxle with the pump facing up. Refer to Figure 4.

6. Remove the TSS sensor mounting bolt using an 8 mm socket and separate the TSS sensor from the pump. Refer to Figure 5.

7. Remove the nine (9) pump mounting bolts using an 8 mm socket. Refer to Figure 6.

8. Install a slide hammer adapter (T81P-78103-A) on the pump using two (2) pump removal bolts (T94P-77000-G).

9. Install the impact slide hammer (T50T-100-A) on the adapter.

10. Install a large screwdriver through the TSS hole. Do not locate screwdriver on the reverse clutch hub tabs. Refer to Figure 7.

11. Remove the pump while holding the components into the case with the screwdriver. Remove the # 1 thrust bearing. This bearing may be attached to the pump support or on the reverse clutch hub. Refer to Figure 8.

12. Remove the pump support mounting bolts using a T-30 TORX socket and ratchet. Refer to Figure 9.

13. Remove the pump support. Refer to Figure 10.

14. Remove the pump-to-case gasket and separator plate and discard the gasket. Refer to Figure 11.

15. Remove the pump seal and discard. Refer to Figure 12.

16. Install the pump alignment pins (T94P-77000-P) in the holes as shown in Figure 13. Use the bolt hole next to the TSS sensor hole and the bolt hole opposite it for the alignment pins.

17. Install the separator plate and new gasket (F3RZ-7G331-A). Refer to Figure 14.

18. Install the pump support. Refer to Figure 15.

19. Install four (4) mounting bolts using a T-30 TORX socket and ratchet and tighten the bolts to 13 N-m (10 lb.ft.).

20. Remove the alignment pins and install and torque the remaining two (2) bolts to 13 N-m (10 lb.ft.). Refer to Figure 16.

21. Install the new pump seal (F3RZ-7A248-A). Ensure that the white stripe is visible all around the pump. Refer to Figure 17.

22. Visually inspect the case flange for damage or burrs.

23. Lubricate the # 1 thrust bearing with petroleum jelly and install on the pump support. Refer to Figure 18.

24. Lubricate the pump support seals and the pump bore in the case.

25. Install the pump removal bolts (T94P-77000-G) and lower the pump assembly into the case. Refer to Figure 19.

26. Install the nine (9) pump mounting bolts and torque to 13 N-m (10 lb.ft.) in the sequence shown in Figure 20.

27. Install the TSS sensor and mounting bolt and tighten to 14 N-m (10 lb.ft.). Refer to Figure 21.

28. Install the pump drive shaft. Refer to Figure 22.

29. Install the torque converter into the transaxle. Refer to Figure 23.

30. Reinstall the transaxle into the vehicle. Refer to Section 07-01 of the appropriate Service Manual for installation details.
