4. Remove seven (7) bolts from battery tray and remove tray.

CAUTION:
USE EXTREME CARE NOT TO PLACE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE ON THE A/C LINES AND FITTINGS WHEN DISCONNECTING OR REPOSITIONING A/C COMPONENTS. EXCESSIVE PRESSURE MAY CAUSE COMPONENT DAMAGE AND A/C SYSTEM LEAKS.

NOTE:
ON SOME VEHICLES, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO DISCONNECT AND POSITION THE A/C SUCTION ACCUMULATOR/DRIER OUT OF THE WAY TO ALLOW ENOUGH ROOM FOR MAIN CONTROL COVER REMOVAL. REMOVE THE TWO (2) SCREWS FROM THE A/C ACCUMULATOR BRACKET AND POSITION THE A/C SUCTION ACCUMULATOR/DRIER OUT OF THE WAY TO GAIN REMOVAL ROOM FOR MAIN CONTROL COVER REMOVAL. REFER TO FIGURE 1.

5. Disconnect the TR sensor electrical connector.
6. Remove the two (2) bolts and the TR sensor from the transaxle.
7. Disconnect the transaxle harness electrical connector.
8. Place a drain pan under the main control cover.

9. Disconnect the transaxle cooler inlet line from the transaxle and position it out of the way. Refer to Figure 2.

10. Remove fourteen (14) bolts, main control cover and gasket from transaxle. Refer to Figure 3.

11. Remove the wire harness clip from the main control valve body assembly. Refer to Figure 4.

12. Remove the twelve (12) mounting bolts from the main control valve body assembly. Refer to Figure 5.

NOTE:
USE CAUTION NOT TO DAMAGE THE MANUAL VALVE WHEN DISCONNECTING THE MANUAL VALVE FROM THE MANUAL VALVE LINK. CAREFULLY LIFT THE MAIN CONTROL VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY AWAY FROM THE CASE WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY DISCONNECTING THE MANUAL VALVE LINK. REFER TO FIGURE 6.

13. Squeeze the retaining tabs on the solenoid valve body harness connector and push the solenoid valve body harness connector down through the transaxle case. Remove the main control valve body assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Figure 7.

For main control valve body disassembly and assembly procedures, refer to Main Control Valve Body listed under Disassembly and Assembly of Subassemblies in Section 07-01 of the 1995 Contour/Mystique Service Manual.

INSTALLATION

NOTE:
INSPECT SOLENOID VALVE BODY HARNESS CONNECTOR O-RING AND REPLACE IT IF NECESSARY BEFORE INSTALLING SOLENOID VALVE BODY HARNESS CONNECTOR IN THE TRANSAXLE CASE.

1. Position main control valve body assembly and squeeze the retaining tabs on the solenoid valve body harness connector. Push solenoid valve body connector harness up through the transaxle case.

2. Connect the manual valve link to the manual valve and carefully position the main control valve body to the transaxle case. Secure with twelve (12) mounting bolts, tightening the bolts in the sequence shown to 10 N-m (89 lb.in.). Refer to Figure 8.

3. Loosen the ball stud on the manual valve detent lever. Refer to Figure 9.

4. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever and remove the retaining bolt and manual lever from the manual shaft. Refer to Figure 10.

5. Install Shifter Shaft Alignment Tool (T94P-77000-H, or equivalent) on the manual control shaft and rotate the manual control shaft until the tool alignment pin fits into the case hole. Refer to Figure 11.
6. Rotate the manual detent valve to the "D" position and initially tighten the manual valve detent lever ball stud.
7. Remove the Shifter Shaft Alignment Tool from the manual control shaft.

8. Rotate the manual valve detent lever until a socket can be placed on the manual valve detent lever ball stud. Tighten the ball stud to 13 N-m (10 lb.ft.). Refer to Figure 12.
9. Rotate the manual valve detent lever to the "N" position.
10. Install the manual control lever on the manual control shaft and secure with the manual control lever retaining bolt. Tighten to 25 N-m (18 lb.ft.).
11. Connect the shift cable to the manual control lever.

12. Install the wire harness clip to the main control valve body assembly. Refer to Figure 13.

13. Install the main control cover with a new gasket and secure with fourteen (14) bolts. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 20 N-m (15 lb.ft.). Refer to Figure 14.

14. Connect the transaxle cooler inlet line to the transaxle. Tighten the cooler inlet line fitting to 23 N-m (17 lb.ft.). Refer to Figure 15.
15. Remove the drain pan from under the main control cover.
16. Connect transaxle harness electrical connector.
17. Install TR sensor and TR sensor retaining bolts. Do not tighten TR sensor bolts at this time.

19. Connect the TR sensor electrical connector.

CAUTION:
USE EXTREME CARE NOT TO PLACE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE ON THE A/C LINES AND FITTINGS WHEN DISCONNECTING OR REPOSITIONING A/C COMPONENTS. EXCESSIVE PRESSURE MAY CAUSE COMPONENT DAMAGE AND A/C SYSTEM LEAKS.

NOTE:
ON SOME VEHICLES, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO DISCONNECT AND POSITION THE A/C SUCTION ACCUMULATOR/DRIER OUT OF THE WAY TO ALLOW ENOUGH ROOM FOR MAIN CONTROL COVER INSTALLATION. REPOSITION THE A/C SUCTION ACCUMULATOR/DRIER ON THE FRONT SUB-FRAME. SECURE WITH TWO (2) SCREWS AND TIGHTEN TO 6-8 N-m (53-71 LB.IN.). REFER TO FIGURE 18.
