Attachment III - Technical Information
SERVICE PROCEDURE1. Remove both front tires.
2. Remove retaining nut holding brake hose to strut assembly. Position brake hose away from strut. Refer to Figure 1.
3. Remove stabilizer bar link upper retaining nut. Position link away from strut. See Figure 1.
NOTE:
Do not let caliper assembly hang from brake hose.
4. Remove caliper anchor bracket retaining bolts. See Figure 2. Secure caliper assembly away from front suspension.
5. Remove front brake rotor from hub assembly.
6. Remove steering knuckle-to-strut pinch bolt.
7. Using wedge or cold chisel and hammer spread steering knuckle-to-strut connection. See Figure 3.
8. Free-up strut from steering knuckle. See Figure 4. The strut will not come completely out of steering knuckle.
9. Remove driveshaft hub nut.
10. Disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle. Position tie rod away from strut.
11. Remove steering knuckle-to-lower ball joint pinch bolt.
12. Using wedge or cold chisel and hammer spread steering knuckle-to-lower ball joint connection. See Figure 5.
13. Free-up lower ball joint stud from steering knuckle. DO NOT separate ball joint at this time.
14. Position adjustable jack stand under hub assembly. See Figure 6.Only support hub assembly. Do not place load on hub assembly.
15. Separate lower ball joint from steering knuckle.
16. Remove adjustable jack from under hub assembly.
17. Using Front Hub Remover/Replacer T81P-1104-C and Metric Hub Remover Adapter T83P-1104-BH, press out driveshaft from wheel hub.
18. Remove hub remover tool.
19. Remove steering knuckle from bottom of strut.
20. Lower vehicle and open hood.
21. NOTE: Support strut assembly during this step. Remove strut top mount nut.
22. Remove strut assembly from vehicle.
23. Disassemble strut as follows:
^ Install spring compressor on spring.
^ WARNING:
THE SPRING IS UNDER EXTREME TENSION. CARE MUST BE TAKEN AT ALL TIMES. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.Compress spring until all tension on top mount is released.
^ Remove thrust bearing retaining nut. See Figure 7.
^ Remove top mount. See Figure 8.
^ Remove thrust and spring seat as an assembly. See Figure 9.
^ Remove strut shaft boot. See Figure 10.
^ Release all tension on spring.
^ Remove spring compressor from spring.
^ Remove spring from strut.
24. Assemble strut as follows:
^ CAUTION:
Make sure spring ends butt correctly against the spring seats. Install new spring on strut.
^ Install spring compressor on spring.
^ Compress spring until all removed components can be installed on strut shaft.
^ Install strut shaft boot.
^ CAUTION:
Make sure spring ends butt correctly against the spring seats. Install thrust bearing/spring seat assembly.
^ Install top mount.
^ Install thrust bearing retaining nut. Tighten nut to 59 Nm (44 lb-ft).
^ Remove spring compressor.
25. Install strut assembly in vehicle. Tighten top mount nut to 46 Nm (34 lb-ft).
26. Raise vehicle.
27. Slide steering knuckle on bottom of strut. Slide steering knuckle up to witness mark on strut housing.
28. Install steering knuckle-to-strut pinch bolt. Partially tighten pinch bolt. Do not final tighten pinch bolt at this time.
29. Install driveshaft in wheel hub.
30. Install driveshaft hub nut. Hand-tighten nut at this time.
31. Install lower ball joint in steering knuckle. Tighten pinch bolt to 83 Nm (61 lb-ft).
32. Tighten steering knuckle-to-strut pinch bolt to 85 Nm (63 lb-ft).
33. Install tie rod to steering knuckle. Tighten castle nut to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
34. Install cotter pin in tie rod castle nut. If necessary, tighten castle nut slightly to align cotter pin hole.
35. Partially tighten driveshaft hub nut to draw driveshaft fully into hub assembly. Do not final tighten nut at this time.
36. Install front brake rotor on hub assembly.
37. Install caliper assembly. Tighten anchor bracket bolts to 120 Nm (89 lb-ft).
38. Connect stabilizer bar link to strut. Tighten retaining nut 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).
39. Connect brake hose to strut. Tighten retaining nut securely.
40. Repeat "Service Procedure" for opposite side spring.
41. Install both front tires.
42. Lower vehicle.
43. Final tighten both driveshaft hub nuts to 290 Nm (214 lb-ft).
