Technical InstructionsNOTE:
Do not wash car or drive on wet road prior to conducting this procedure.
1. Fill tank with fuel. Let vehicle sit for 24 hours minimum before continuing with step # 2. This 24 hour soak period with a full tank of gasoline must be followed for proper inspection.
2. After the 24 hour soak with a full tank of gasoline, run vehicle at idle for 3-5 minutes to pressurize fuel system.
3. Put vehicle on hoist.
4. See Figure 1. Insert a cotton swab (such as a Q-Tip) into one of the openings in the fuel tank reinforcement for the fuel pipe as shown and swab area noted.
5. If the cotton swab is dry or does not smell like gasoline, attach a white plastic tie strap through an opening of the fuel tank filler pipe reinforcement as verification that the tank was inspected. Do not place the tie strap around the entire filler pipe reinforcement. Cut off excess length of tie strap. Release the vehicle.
6. If the cotton swab is moist and smells like gasoline, replace the fuel tank per Contour/Mystique Shop Manual, Section 10-01. Replace fuel drained from fuel tank, pressurize system, and check for leaks. If no leaks are found, release the vehicle.
