Timing Cover: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove valve covers.
2. Install three bar engine support D88L-6000-A, or equivalent, onto engine lifting eyes and support engine.
3. Remove power steering pressure hose bracket bolt from upper front engine support bracket.
4. Disconnect power steering pressure hose from power steering pump, then position hose aside.
5. Remove upper front engine support bracket nuts and front engine support bracket from engine and upper front engine support insulator.
NOTE: Mark location of upper front engine support bracket before removing.
6. Disconnect low coolant level sensor connector from wire harness.
7. Remove radiator coolant recovery reservoir retainers and position radiator coolant recovery reservoir aside.
8. Remove front engine support insulator.
9. Set radiator coolant recovery reservoir into position, then disconnect fuel charging wiring at three connectors on in-line connector bracket at front of righthand cylinder head. Position wiring aside. Loosen power steering pump pulley bolts. Do not completely remove bolts.
10. Remove drive belt.
11. Remove power steering pump pulley from pump.
12. Remove power steering pump and pump support nuts and bolts, then pump and pump support.
13. Raise and support vehicle, then remove oil pan drain plug and drain engine oil. Replace plug with new gasket.
14. Remove through bolt for front engine support insulators.
15. Lower vehicle, then raise engine to gain access for oil pan removal, then support engine with three bar engine support.
16. Position alternator aside, then remove alternator bracket from engine.
17. Remove crankshaft pulley, then disconnect fuel charging wiring from CKP and CMP sensor electrical connectors.
18. Remove oil pan.
19. On models equipped with air conditioning, loosen A/C compressor bolts and position compressor to gain access to front cover bolt.
20. Lower vehicle, then remove fuel charging wiring bracket retainers and A/C hose bracket from front cover stud bolts. Position fuel charging wiring aside.

21. Remove front cover bolts in sequence. It may be necessary to raise and lower vehicle several times to follow bolt removal sequence.
22. Remove front cover and cover gaskets from vehicle. Discard gaskets.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean front cover to cylinder block and cylinder head sealing surfaces.

2. Apply a 0.118 inch diameter bead, approximately 0.472 inch long of black silicone rubber F4AZ-19562-B, or equivalent to cylinder block in six locations.
NOTE: Install front cover and front cover bolts and stud bolts in proper location and sequence no more than six minutes after applying sealer.
3. Install front cover with new cover gasket over alignment dowels to cylinder block and cylinder heads.

4. Install front cover bolts and stud bolts in proper locations and sequence. Tighten cover bolts 1/4 turn after cover contacts cylinder block and cylinder heads. Install bolts and stud bolts no more than six minutes after applying sealer.

5. Install remaining front cover bolts and stud bolts, then torque all front cover bolts and stud bolts in sequence to 15-22 ft lb.
6. Install drive belt idler pulley onto righthand side of front cover.
7. Position fuel charging wiring, then install lower fuel charging wiring bracket retainers and A/C hose bracket to front cover stud bolts.
8. Raise and support vehicle.
9. On models equipped with air conditioning, position A/C compressor.
10. Replace crankshaft front seal if necessary,
11. Install oil pan.
12. Connect fuel charging wiring, CKP and CMP sensor electrical connectors.
13. Install crankshaft pulley.
14. Install alternator bracket and alternator to engine.
15. Install righthand front wheel and tire assembly, then lower vehicle.
16. Lower engine to installed position, then support engine with three bar engine support.
17. Raise and support vehicle, then install front engine support insulator through bolts.
18. Lower vehicle, then install power steering pump support and pump to front of engine.
19. Install power steering pump pulley onto pump, then loosely install bolts.
18. Install accessory drive belt.
19. Tighten power steering pump pulley bolts.
20. Position and connect fuel charging wiring to three connectors on in-line connector bracket at front of righthand cylinder head.
21. Install upper front engine support insulator and upper front engine support bracket.
22. Remove engine support tool, then connect battery ground cable.
23. Fill crankcase to proper level with oil, then fill power steering system with fluid.
24. Run engine and check for leaks, then recheck fluid levels.
