Service Procedure

1. The procedure for timing chain removal and installation can be found in the 1995 Contour/Mystique Service Manual, Page 03-01B-34. This procedure is to be used with the addition of the tensioner adapter plate installation between the tensioners and cylinder block. Refer to Figure 1 for LH timing chain tensioner adapter plate installation and Figure 2 for RH timing chain tensioner adapter plate installation. Install all updated components as listed in the Parts Block at the end of this article.

2. Timing chain tensioners must be installed with piston compressed and locked and are shipped with the piston compressed and locked with a retaining wire. Should the tensioner piston come released, it must be compressed prior to installation. To compress the tensioner piston, refer to the following procedure and Figure 3:

a. Position the timing chain tensioner in a soft-jawed vise.

b. Hold the timing chain tensioner ratchet lock mechanism away from the ratchet stem with a small pick.

CAUTION:
TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER MUST BE COMPRESSED SLOWLY OR DAMAGE TO THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER MAY OCCUR.

NOTE:
PISTON SHOULD RETRACT WITH MINIMAL FORCE. REPOSITION TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER TO ELIMINATE SIDE LOADING IF BINDING OCCURS.

c. Slowly compress timing chain tensioner. Engine oil will bleed out of cylinder bore.

NOTE:
WIRE MUST REMAIN IN TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER UNTIL TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER IS INSTALLED WITH PISTON BOTTOMED IN BORE.

d. Push down on ratchet stem until flush with tensioner face. Retain piston with a 1.02-1.65 mm (0.040-0.065") diameter wire.

CAUTION:
THE FL-820-S OIL FILTER INCLUDES A REVISED SILICONE BY-PASS CHECK VALVE WHICH MUST BE USED WITH THE UPDATED CAMSHAFT DRIVE/TENSIONER ADAPTER COMPONENTS. FAILURE TO USE THE FL-820-S OIL FILTER, OR EQUIVALENT, MAY DEGRADE FIX EFFECTIVENESS PRIOR TO THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE INTERVAL (8000 km/5000 MILES).

3. Change the engine oil and oil filter (F1AZ-6731-BD).

NOTE:
THE F5RZ-6L266-CA TENSIONER IS FOR USE WITH THE F5RZ-6C275-AA AND -BA ADAPTER PLATES ONLY. THESE SPECIAL SERVICE TENSIONERS ARE 1 mm SHORTER THAN PRODUCTION TENSIONERS TO ACCOMMODATE THE THICKNESS OF THE ADAPTER PLATES. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SUBSTITUTE PRODUCTION TENSIONERS WITH THIS FIX.
