Diagnostic Procedure

1. Allow the vehicle to sit for a minimum of 4 hours. This provides adequate time for the timing chain tensioners to leak down.

2. Start the engine, and listen for noise. The "clatter" or rapping noise will occur immediately upon start-up and last approximately 1/2 to 2-1/2 seconds. In all cases, the noise is gone before the engine reaches a stabilized idle. The noise typically comes from the front of the engine (vehicle's RH side), and will not reoccur upon restart.

3. After concern is verified as the engine "clatter/rapping," install the Modified 1995 Camshaft Drive and Tensioner Adapter components, and change the oil and filter. All chain drive components must be upgraded to 1996 level components to complete the fix. Refer to the Parts Block at the end of this article and the following Service Procedure for details.

NOTE:
RIGHT HAND AND LEFT HAND TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER ADAPTER PLATES ARE UNIQUE AND SHOULD NOT BE REVERSED. ADAPTER PLATES ARE MARKED "LB" FOR LEFT BANK, AND "RB" FOR RIGHT BANK.
